The American population of mid-life single heterosexual females continues to grow. Ostensibly considered an increasingly acceptable lifestyle choice, archaic stereotypes persist of the single woman as |spinster,| |old maid,| |man-hungry,| financially impoverished, or emotionally desperate for a husband. Psychoanalytic theory has long judged the decision an implication of pathological accommodation to fears of intimacy, sexual conflict, or gender identity ambivalence. Prior studies most often examine the repercussions of mid-life female singlehood in vocational, social, and medical arenas. Until recently, little attention has been paid the psychological experience of the mid-life single female, regarding issues precipitating selection of a single status and overall degree of satisfaction; burdens/stressors and means for coping; regrets/concerns regarding parental status; utilization of familial, psychological, and social support systems; and greatest benefits/drawbacks to the current lifestyle preference. Exploration of these topics is frequently conducted by anonymous, multiple choice questionnaires, with subjects asked to designate select options for response to assumed dilemmas of remaining single. the intensive interview method employed in this qualitative research study with a phenomenological approach of a heuristic nature allows five collaborators to freely express their truths. the essence of their poignant struggles with sexual desire, self-esteem, compromised priorities of work and child-rearing, social stigmatization, and longing for male partnership is captured in their courageous words.
